Question of the Day: ICT 1 Final: Tell us your thoughts on the growing offerings in digital books and textbooks. Do you like the idea of having your books on a Phone, Tablet or other device? What might be the drawbacks? What percentage of textbooks do you think will be digital 10 years from now? Do you think you’d read more if you had access to e-books? How do you think e-books will change studying and learning?
The most obvious advantage of this is that you can replace heavy, bulky textbooks with a thin electronic device. Rather than breaking your back carrying 5 textbooks, you can store all of the books on the device. Also, you never risk the chance of forgetting one textbook if you have them all saved on the e-reader. Digital versions of textbooks actually cost 50% less than hard copies and text books. Although it may seem like i'm spending alot of money short term, I will actually be saving money in the long-run. I LOVE that idea of not carrying books around , for the sake of my back AND also losing one of my books accidentally. Losing a book can possibly draw me back both academically and financially.
10 years from now I'm pretty sure nearly 99% of textbooks will be digital, for people will understand the mere pros vs cons of having such a device rather than just plain old text books. Everyday people are working to make life EASIER for us to live, Having an e-book is just another step to easier living. For many me, the strain of staring at a computer screen while completing assignments is enough. I cannot bear the thought of reading hundreds of pages on a glaring screen. While technology has greatly reduced glare, I find that reading a print copy of a textbook is less straining than the digital forms.
Although you might have the luxury of having all of your textbooks in one lightweight device to carry to class, you may find yourself forgetting to charge it. If so, you may be stuck with a low battery in the middle of an intense classroom discussion. I wouldn't want this to happen to me in the middle of a very important lecture.
I don't think that i'd find myself reading more having access to an e-book.
I'm lazy already and doing something constructive on n electronic device is just going to either make me want to sleep or find another electronic device that I can play a game on. Since I started out with reading a traditional book , I look at anything electronic as a recess or game, its my automatic reflex about them. say computer and I think game, social, fun, easy.
But thats just how it is for some students. Some people like myself feel that when talking about a traditional book, studying , hard work, dedication may come to mind. traditional book- HARD e-book - EASY ...
can this change the way people study forever? yes. can it be for the worse ? yes
we will have to come up with different method of studying and stay focused so that we don't think that just because we're going digital everything will be easy for us.
